International Women Day with Women Techmakers in Niger State

International Women’s Day celebrated on the 8th of March every year is a day set aside to celebrate women all over the world whether Caucasian, Black, or Asian. It outlines the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women, while also making a call to action for accelerating gender balance. This year’s theme #BalanceForBetter preaches a gender-balance world. and lends a voice to the cause for a gender balanced boardroom,  government, media coverage, sport coverage and technology world.

In the spirit of solidarity, the Women Technology Makers of Google Developers Group Minna @GDGMinna organized it’s own International women’s day event which happened on the 27th of April, 2019.  The event took place at Paritie Innovation Hub Minna from 10am-3pm and had women of different ages in attendance. It is worthy to note that there was a great improvement in the turnout of women highlighted in the statistics of about 60% of the attendees being females and all the speakers except one being an all females affair.

The purpose of the event was to encourage women and make them believe they have a place in the technology world as much as their male counterparts and create a female friendly technology environment. There were codelabs session where the attendees were introduced to Internet of Things and Javascript by Mercy Aboh and Aliyu Abubakar respectively. The session was also an avenue for first time speakers Omowumi Samson and Catherine Baha who spoke about Ethical Hacking and roles of women in technology respectively. Below are some of the topics that were treated at the event;

  • Tech, The Past, The Present and The Future By Miss Sa’adat.
  • Self Motivation – Miss Memunat.
  • Introduction to IOT (Internet of Things)[CodeLab)] – Miss Mercy Aboh.
  • Ethical Hacking – Miss Omowumi V. Samson.
  • Introduction to JavaScript (CodeLab) – Aliyu Aboubakar.
  • Poetry about womanhood – Mrs Cynthia Epelle.
  • Roles of Women in Technology – Miss Catherine Baha
  • Breaking the Stereotype – Mariam Musa

The event can be classified as a success as everyone learnt a thing or two, every female in attendance was made to understand that they have a place in the technology community and sparked the tech enthusiasts’ interest the more to strive for greater heights.
